Robot mower winter storage: build a plan from the manual

Sources awaiting check

The right winter routine depends on the mower and its charging equipment. Start with the exact manual rather than a generic instruction to leave every battery full or remove every dock.

Decide when mowing should pause

Watch conditions as well as the calendar. The RHS: Lawn mowing guide guide advises against mowing when ground is very soft, wet or frozen. An automatic schedule should not override an unsuitable lawn surface.

Review growth, local conditions and the model's operating instructions before deciding on the last cut. Keep wildlife and family use in your daytime scheduling decisions.

Record the storage requirements

Husqvarna's Husqvarna UK: Automower support guide by season (page dated 11 March 2026) gives these points for its Automower range: fully charge the battery before storage, keep the mower indoors somewhere frost-free (above 0°C), and store the charging station indoors (for NERA models the baseplate can stay outdoors). It adds that boundary wires can stay in the ground, that blades and screws should be changed before storage, and that a dealer clean after each season is recommended. Treat these as one manufacturer's guidance and check them against your own manual.

Find the maker's instructions for shutdown, battery charge level, storage temperature and charging during storage. Note whether the dock, power supply or navigation accessories need separate treatment.

If you cannot find a clear answer, ask the manufacturer for the exact model. Do not substitute a rule from a different battery product.

Clean and inspect safely

Isolate the mower as instructed before handling it. Follow the permitted cleaning method; do not assume a hose or pressure washer is allowed. Arrange replacement of worn or damaged parts using the maker's procedure.

Husqvarna UK: Robotic mower FAQ provides manufacturer guidance for its own range, but the detailed cleaning and maintenance limits still belong to the individual manual.

Leave a restart note

Store the manual, access credentials securely and any removed components together. Record faults noticed before storage, so spring does not begin with the same unresolved problem.

Before restarting, inspect the lawn for changes, obstacles and damage. Check that boundaries and exclusion areas still match the garden. Test operation according to the instructions before leaving a normal schedule enabled. A short written winter plan makes both shutdown and the first spring session easier to manage.
